Detached Garage Sparks Fire Damage in a Covina Home
Fires can start anywhere, and if unchecked, they spread quickly, causing widespread damages. An incident that affected a Covina home started in a detached garage then spread to the main house before it was controlled. The cleanup and debris removal necessary after the incident required assistance, so they called SERVPRO.
The case was no different from other fire damage incidents in Covina since the intensity of damage left in different parts of a property differed. In the garage where the fire started, it consumed everything, including a car that was parked inside, leaving mountains of debris to remove. Damage to the main house was minimal and restricted mostly to the outer wall facing the garage and the attic. Soot, ash, and other deposits had also spread to various rooms inside the house, necessitating cleaning and deodorization.
On scoping the loss site, our SERVPRO team realized that a thorough clean-up of the loss site was crucial. The house would regain its preloss state after the replacement and restoration of some materials on the walls, but the garage needed a complete rebuild. We also had to help with the disposal of dangerous wastes such as synthetic materials and fuel residues from the burnt car. Our crews are prepared to handle such challenges. We have different trash receptacles, including trashcans on wheels, which can hold solid wastes and even liquids. We also use advanced cleaning products to help remove stubborn residues.
After addressing the areas ravaged by flames, we embarked on cleaning the residues deposited inside the main house. Although the residue clean-up is simpler than other aspects of the restoration, it presents some challenges too. For example, fine residues penetrate all nooks and crannies in the house, making removal a challenge. Our SERVPRO technicians use different cleaning approaches, including vacuuming and wiping surfaces with cleaning sponges to remove residues, which helped us remove most of the dry residues. We also used wet cleaning procedures combining standard cleaning products and deodorizers to remove soils and bad odor.
